Two Middle Tennessee football players have been named to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1,000 list, as announced by bowl officials Wednesday. Defensive end Jordan Ferguson and receiver Izaiah Gathings are the Blue Raiders who have been named to the list. Each year, approximately 1,000 all-star game eligible players are drafted, signed after the draft, or attend a rookie mini-camp. The aim for Shrine Bowl 1,000 is to serve as a look into the scouting process, as well as begin to preview college players who are currently all-star game eligible for the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl and 2023 NFL Draft class.

The comprehensive list includes players from all four levels of college football and consultation with NFL and college personnel. Ferguson had a banner season in 2021 when he established new career marks in tackles (58), tackles for loss (16.5), sacks (9), hurries (14), forced fumbles (3) and fumble recoveries (2). He ranked 22nd nationally in tackles for loss per game (1.3) and was 30th in sacks per game (.69). - Middle Tennessee football

Memphis wide receiver/tight end Jeremy Tate Jr. entered the transfer portal Monday, just days before the Tigers' spring game this week. Tate confirmed his decision to The Commercial Appeal. Tate, a 6-foot-4 senior, played in 14 games over the past two seasons. He recorded two catches for 12 yards in 2020 but did not record a catch last season. Tate was a three-star recruit from Mississippi when he signed with the Tigers in their 2018 recruiting class. He switched to tight end during last season due to injuries and remained there during spring practice. Tight end coach Brad Salem said this month there's a four-way competition at the position but didn't mention Tate among the group. Junior Caden Prieskorn backed up Sean Dykes last season and he's battling with senior John Hassell, junior Drew Martin and incoming sophomore transfer Anthony Landphere. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Toledo got within seven points with 1:08 remaining, but Thomas Cluckey recovered an onside kick to secure it. "Winning a bowl game, you're a champion, you're Bahamas Bowl champion and these seniors, these guys, they can take that with them the rest of their lives ," Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill said after his 101st victory with the program.
